Chicagoland Vampires - Chloe Neil

The Chicagoland Vampires series is not your every day vampire book, in these books the main female character Merit is so strong and determined. She does not wait around for her happy ending to come, she grabs it with both hands and forces it. I did not expect much of it at the beginning, but the more I read I grew more interested in the outcome of the characters.

However, this series has been long and ongoing and personally, it just gets worse with each book. Some series can be long and keep the readers interested, but this book is not one of them. It has a complete total of twelve books if you count the newest one that's set to come out next year. I admit I am still going to read it, but I am so over the characters.

I do love that the characters in this book are all of age and not a bunch of horny teenagers. That makes reading the sex scenes a little less awkward.

The story follows twenty-seven year old Merit who was a grad student completing her literature degree in medieval literature. While a smart girl, she also has a rebellious side to her as she refuses to follow in her family's footsteps. She comes from a wealthy family where they believe in power first before family. That is, what drives a crack in between their relationship. One night as she is walking through her campus when she's attacked by a vampire, but before he could make a meal of her she's saved by another vampire.

Her hero turns out to be Ethan Sullivan, Master Vampire of House Cadogan. Even though he stopped the attack, Merit was going to die unless he made her a vampire. She however was not thrilled about any of it and at the beginning would have preferred to die. She hated the fact that she was a vampire and even more that she was sired to 'Darth Sullivan' a nickname Merit and her best friend Malory gave to Ethan.

He too was not the happiest master vampire because he felt that she should be more grateful to him and show the respect that was deserved by him being a much older and higher ranked vampire than her. Despite their obvious attraction to each other Merit refused to be romanced by Ethan and that made him want her more. That is one ting I loved about Merit, that she didn't just bow down to this green eyed, blonde vampire master.

Eventually they did end up becoming a couple when they both decide to meet in the middle. He stopped trying to control her and decided work with her as a partner and not a leader (mostly) and she opened up to him completely and utterly. Together they go through a long line of battles that involve fae, sorcerers, wolves, and much more.

I admit I love how Chloe cleverly tailored each book for each event and even though I personally am over the characters, I love the conflict in each one. The only thing that keeps me reading as I wonder how they are going to get out of each situation.

On a final note, I will say that these books are worth a read on a rainy day. I give it four stars so go check it out.
