Vampire Academy has got to be the most talked about Vampire series since Twilight and with good reasons. This series has been a pleasure to read since I seriously love a good vampire series. I fell in love with the characters and the entire idea revolved around the different type of vampires. I literally went through all six books within a month. That's how great they are.
The first book is a bit slow but it builds the starter base for the rest. I promise you if you continue on, everything gets so much more intense. Not to compare books because I honestly try my hardest not to, but much like Twilight, the first book was not as action packed as the others. However it molds the world and gives us an idea on what each character is like and then we see them grow.

Vampire Academy is a school obviously for vampires, but not all Vampires. In this series, they're three types of vampires, The Moroi who are living vampires who feed on blood and can work elemental magic. The Strigoi who are undead vampires and are strong and murderous. In order to become one, they have to kill or be bitten by another Strigoi. Finally, the Dhampirs who are the offspring of a Moroi and human or two Dhampirs.
The Dhampirs are trained to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi while the Moroi learn how to perfect their magic. In this series the first main characters are Rose and Lissa. Rose, a Dhampir, is dedicated to protecting Lissa, who is a Royal Moroi and her best friend. Rose is also Lissa's shadowkissed partner for Lissa brought Rose back from the brink of death and forever marked them as bonded. Together they run away to protect Lissa from an unknown evil within the Academy but after two years on the run they are brought back to face their problems head on.
Throughout the series many changes come, new characters show and things get ever more dangerous with the Strigoi. Both girls gain a love, for rose it was the gorgeous Russian god Dimitri Belikov. He was named the best Dhampir at the school, but also her teacher. The two go through a rocky relationship and even heartbreak when he's turned Strigoi then back to Dhampir.
Lissa on the other hand, fell in love with known bad boy Christian Ozera. He a Moroi who was shamed and an outcast from others in the school because his parents decided to become Strigoi and were killed. Lissa, having her own parents die from the car accident that nearly killed Rose, she had something in common with the fire starter. Their love too had their good and bads since Christan was an outcast and Lissa was the 'it' girl.

Overall this series was very well written much like everything else Richelle Mead writes and the characters and stories were executed grandly. I honestly could go on about it, but I would honestly suggest just going out there and reading it yourself. Five stars from me.
